UK Ad Spend Hits Record £21.4bn

It was recently reported that in 2016 marketers spent £21.4bn on advertising, with a 3.7% rise - marking the seventh consecutive year of growth.

As digital platforms continue to dominate, 2016 saw internet ad spend had increased by 13.4% to £10.3billion for the year – mobile accounting for 99% of this growth. From reviewing previous internet ad spend patterns, it is forecasted that this will continue to increase by 8.5% for 2017 and 7.6% in 2018.

Is your business taking advantage of all available digital marketing channels?

More and more businesses are turning to internet paid marketing to further increase the reach of products and services. However due to this, some businesses are implementing these ads without the knowledge to accompany. The industry has seen a rapid increase of PPC advertisements that fail to meet quality scores – thus providing a negative user experience.

Better Ads Standards

The Coalition for Better Ads has developed “Better Ads Standards” for desktop, web and mobile web for North America and Europe. This new regulation ensures that all PPC ads published will have to meet consumer acceptability. Google has announced that this new compliance will be filtered out into the Chrome browser by early 2018.

“We hope these initial standards will be a wake-up call to brands, retailers, agencies, publishers, and their technology suppliers, and that they will retire the ad formats that research proves annoy and abuse consumers."

- Randall Rothenberg, President and CEO, IAB

In order for marketers to prepare for the change, Google is offering a tool that will analyse ads and pre-warn of any that may be at risk. This new process will ensure that all ads are of quality and help to simmer the internet of pop-up ads, auto-play video ads and large stick ads – all examples of ads that are not favoured by users.
